1977 Pye CT450 : G11 Chassis

Post by Mikey66 » Sun Mar 20, 2016 10:35 am

I've been after a Pye CT450 for ages and finally thanks to this forum I have one :bba

A nice drive up the motorway to a place called Staindrop and the set was mine.

I also called in to see birthday boy Crusty and got to see his superb collection of early colour tellies. Nice to see you again Chris.

Drove home along the A66/67/685/M6 and witnessed a magnificent sunset over the lakes.

A good day all round

I noticed the transit screw was still there

A silver reservoir cap?

I couldn't resist switching on (mainly because the seller had already done so) and was rewarded with a good picture so my spare NOS 20AX can stay in its box for another day

Did the sets have the bad green capacitors in the line output stage.

It looks in good condition, inside and out.

Seconded !
The set looks very clean and in good condition it would be a shame to blow the tube neck off! :ccb

Hi Mike
That's a nice example you have there.
We had mostly Philips G11 sets before t then we started getting the pye version. In my humble opinion the pye had a better button but the only weakness was the tiny fixing screws that held the front control panel on used to loosen as the plastic fixings would crumble.
They had a dark rosewood version that looked really classy .
As has been mentioned do change that smoothing cap as soon as you can .
Regards.
Gary.

Thirded!! Also go over the line and timbase boards (especially around the field chip) for dry joints.

Watch out for that green line output stage tuning cap too! If that goes open circuit, the EHT will rise alarmingly and the resulting flashover could be disastrous.

I have just removed the power & line timebase boards for inspection and to replace the old 470uf cap.

There were some dodgy looking joints on the large wire wound resistors on the power board

New cap & old cap

Fortunately Tas, no green meanies on the timebase board

Looks like a new tuning cap has been fitted - top left

I've gone over the timebase board re-flowing the transformers and any other suspicious joints.. I'll refit them tomorrow and take it from there.

Thanks for all your comments and tips :aad

There is one component on there I suggest you change (it was an official change by Philips). The yellow cap in the centre top just above the large coil.....I think it marked 9n1 2000V. Should be changed for one of the block types....same value and voltage but more reliable. The 'rounded' type fitted tended to fail causing increased EHT and possible damage to the tube.

I spent last night removing all the panels and going over any dry joints - there weren't that many.
The cap mentioned by Sideband (C3135 0.91uf) was replaced, along with the main smoothing cap and the 47uf 250V (C4040).
I also had to remove the front control panel to clean the volume pot.

Nice and clean

Signs of a little used set - no wear around the mains switch

I'm really pleased with this set, I think it has seen very little use, the tube has excellent emission and it is a really clean example.

Hi Mike
What a beauty , now you've done the replacement caps and joints your set will run for years .
My parents had a 26" Philips version which ran for 10 years after I soldered all the joints up .
