I bought this set from ebay about three years ago. I wanted one because i was born in my grandparents house and this was the tv set that they had. This was in Worlingham, very near to Lowestoft where i guess the set was born as well. One of our neighbors was the service manager at Pye, Albert Chilvers, when i 12, i caught the the TV bug, Albert gave me some early Pye manuals. So i have very fond memory's from that time.
Unfortunately at some time in its life this set had been painted white. Because of this i have been a bit slow at getting stated on it. I stripped out the chassis and took the complete front out of the cabinet, and tried paint stripper on the cabinet. It hardly touched the paint, and i was concerned that it might lift the veneer. So have decided to try and re veneer the set. In the mean time, i could not resist the much more enjoyably job of restoring the works. After replacing all the caps, and the heater thermisor, i left it on the variac for a day with HT around 100 volts. The next day i powered it up to full mains voltage. The HT struggled to get up to 190 volts. This was because the original selamium rectifier was worn out. I replaced it with a BY100 and 20 ohm dropper section. We now had full HT and the radio section worked really well. This set uses a separate FM tuner head with a ECC85. Next tried the TV section, it worked but had a really bad line jitter, this was traced to C96, a 390pf SRC silva mica cap playing up. Low brightness was R125, 390K gone high value. After replacing the frame lin pots, the set has now been running all day very well.
Now the job i am dreading, the cabinet restore........ Will update when its all back together, what better way can there be to spend a bank holiday weekend?

It's got FM radio. That's an interesting variant of the Pam 600 chassis. What type of tuner is employed? Looking through the pages of the 1959.60 R & T book certain Pye group sets were fitted with a modified fireball tuner. Worth noting a Jason FM tuner used a fireball tuner which allowed reception of FM and 405 TV sound.

Hi Till, i remember using the Jason tuner back in the 70's for fm radio connected to a Mullard 3-3 amp. what fun those days were. This Pye has the small square tuner unit, it does not look anything like a fireball. I will take a picture of the tuner chassis next time i am in Norwich.

Hi David,
Point of interest is how the FM/TV switching is implemented. What is certain the Pye group were not all that keen on TVs with FM radio. In the 1959/60 R & T servicing book the TVs with FM are Invicta and Pam models, no offerings from Pye. In the 1960/61 book the details of the Pye TV/FM model V530 can be found in pages 586 to 590. The set is a development of the V510 which is also in the same book. The V530 has a separate FM tuner and the sound IFs are 38.15Mhz on TV and the standard FM radio IF of 10.7Mhz.
An earlier TV/FM set, the Pye CTL58VS employed a Cyldon tuner instead of the usual Pye incremental coil unit.

This looks like a great set ,
Is this the one with a 19 inch crt
The only reason I ask this is I have a service manual for a couple of sets like this but
The look as if they have the more common 17 inch crts
I was wondering if it had been modified to take the 19 inch
I've just acquired a V510 that uses a very similar chassis
But again with my set the service manual differs from the set
The manual says the frame output is a PCL82 but the set has a PCL85 output stage
So many variations of the same sets :stm:

Looking forward to the finished photos

Chris

Hi David,
separate FM tuner, the best method to incorporate radio in a TV receiver. GEC and Ferguson favoured this TV and FM radio set-up. Some makers like Ultra and Rediffusion even employed a separate 10.7Mhz IF amplifier.

This set does use a 10.7mhz if for the FM tuner, I will try to upload the relevant switching circuits next time.
Here are some pictures of the set back together, its a bit chunky now due to recovering the cabinet.

Hi David,
In all the years I have been the TV trade (coming up for 56 years) I've never seen that model.
Good looking and unusual set.

What a cracking set , love all PYE sets , in fact that's all I collect now days due to space issues
I must admit I have never seen this model before, I have sets with the same chassis type
but this model has passed me by
As I said in a previous reply your set uses a 19 inch CRT but the only reference I can find
for a similar set has a 17 inch CRT
I must say you made a fantastic job of the cabinet & the total restoration .

Can I ask what you recovered the cabinet with ?
From the photo it looks very good , I have a PYE v200 that could do with recovering
& the colour looks very similar to the v200.

Regards

Chris
