Nice. I'm thinking it must be a Co-Op electrical department, as I'm not aware of the radio on the shelf at top right having been branded anything but Defiant, and Defiant goods as far as I know were never available to other retailers.

Yes, Paul - and the price card in front definitely says DEFIANT, then 14 something.

As there is no pound sign, it's probably 14 gns ... £14 14s (or £14.70 in Mickey Mouse money).

It was always surprising how cheap prices in guineas appeared to look - especially if there was an extra half guinea tacked on the end ...

Probably quite a large store judging by the reflection in the TV screens

I've got one of those little Defiant radios here, runs off a strange (to me at least!) battery of 2 4.5V sections with a plug in connector on top.

Plenty space for 6 AA batteries, not sure about 6 C batteries though.

Bliss. Anyone else remember when the Co-Op was called just "The Store"? We all knew what that meant.
Funny to think in those days we called shops by their owners names rather than the shops name.

Where we were: Food shop was Curry's (ran by Mr. and Mrs. Curry). Charlton's (Post Office ran by Mr Charlton) and Cleverly's, the newsagents ran by the horrible Mrs. Cleverly. Despite her unpleasantness towards children I remember buying Tudor Crisps and Matchbox cars at her place.

Another couple of Co-op specific terms, 'flimsy' and 'divi' Not sure if they were UK wide or Scotland only though.

You certainly got your 'divi' down south; also I can remember my Mum's four-digit share number to this day :)

Yes Mike,I can still remember my parents Co-op divi number as well.

The flimsy was a slip of paper that you were given with each purchase. It had your number and the value of the purchase so that when the divi rate was announced you could calculate how much you were due.

During the early 60s the 'store' in my home town was individual shops spread over 3 streets. By the end of the 60s many of these had been merged into larger premises. At that time the radio and TV section had the largest display of TV sets for 25 miles. Oh how things changed.

Certainly not heard of Flimsy but do remember Co-Op stamps, similar to Green Shield ones.
